EDI is short for Electronic Data Interchange. It is a trade exchange system that replaces common business forms and documents such as purchase orders, invoices, shipping documents, etc., with a computer-based communications and records keeping system.


Another definition of EDI: Electronic Data Interchange is the inter-organizational, computer-to-computer exchange of business documentation in a standard machine-processable format.


There are a number of key points in this definition that makes EDI very different from other forms of paper or electronic communications. Firstly, EDI happens between companies, it is cross enterprise. While the growth in the use of computers and other advanced technologies has been tremendous during the past decades, the same trend is beginning to happen between companies.
